A jeep safari in Jim Corbett uses a private 4x4 Gypsy — the same vehicle used by forest naturalists and wildlife researchers. Your group (up to 6 adults) has the entire vehicle exclusively — no strangers, no compromises. The open roof with raised seating gives 360-degree visibility. The driver and guide are forest department authorized and experienced in tracking.
The biggest advantage of the jeep: flexibility. When a sighting occurs, the guide instructs the driver to stop, position, and wait at the optimal angle. No other vehicle can override this. On a canter, the driver follows a fixed schedule and cannot spend unlimited time at a single sighting. Serious wildlife photographers overwhelmingly prefer the jeep for this reason.
Canter Safari — Everything You Need to Know
The Canter is a 16-seat open safari bus — the only vehicle authorized for day visitor access to Dhikala core zone. If seeing Dhikala is your priority, the Canter is not optional — it is the only option. The elevated seating (higher than a jeep) actually gives excellent visibility over the grasslands. The open design with fold-down canvas roof (lowered in good conditions) gives unobstructed sightlines.
The Canter travels 32 km through the forest to reach Dhikala Chaur, spends approximately 2 hours in the grassland, then returns. The fixed route covers the most productive wildlife-watching terrain in the zone. The tradeoff: you share with 15 others (a mix of groups), and the driver cannot make extended stops for specific sightings.
